A native
New-Yorker, Fran studied advertising and art history at Parsons
School of Design in Manhattan, where her art career was in magazine
and newspaper publishing. She and her husband Bill moved to the
Cape in 1975, where they both became founding Charter Members of The
Guild of Harwich Artists. Watercolor is Fran’s medium of choice
(she also paints in oils), and she uses the English tradition of
layered washes. Her style is representational, using observed facts
but creating fictions to reveal truth. Primarily a landscape and
waterfront painter, Fran also enjoys painting architectural
subjects. She finds old New England houses with their big chimneys,
varied rooflines, and multiple additions especially interesting,
with their interiors being most challenging in terms of light and
perspective.
Fran has
served in every elected position in the Guild, and is a member of
Chatham’s Creative Arts Center. Her interest in the history of
costume led her to the Harwich Historical Society where she serves
on the executive board. She is represented on Cape by The Art
Gallery, and in many private and corporate collections in Canada,
Britain, Germany, France, Taiwan, the Netherlands and the US. She
works in her Fo’cas’le House Gallery and Studio.
